About St. Mark’s

Where is St. Mark’s? What’s it near? How do I get around?

St. Mark’s Church

The heart of the area is the church. In 1899, in order to accommodate the increasing numbers of Catholic families who were crowding into the Ashmont section and found it hard to attend their parish church in Lower Mills, built a substantial wooden Chapel that would seat seven hundred people, and dedicated it to Saint Mark the Evangelist, with Saint Gregory’s being the “Mother Church”. It had a brick foundation and was built at the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Roseland Street.

Caffe Zia Gianna

I have featured this adorable spot before and it is a staple right near St. Marks. The owner, Nino, hopes to create a community where people can enjoy their food and company in a bright, warm Sicilian‑inspired setting. Rather than rushing out with a cup of coffee in hand (though that is an option!), Nino hopes to create an environment where busy Bostonians can take a breath and relax.

Another great neighborhood restaurant is El Barrio. They offer authentic Mexican cuisine, with affordable meals for lunch and dinner. They also cater!
